"Life begins with our first breath and will end after our last. To contemplate breathing is to contemplate life itself.”
The fact is simple and it is that breath means life.
Our breath is our life force.
With the breath, not only are we alive and connected to our spirit, but we are connected to all those that are alive, to all other humans and living creatures that consume air.
We are indeed connected to one another, not just figuratively, but literally through the air we breathe in and out together.
With the use of our breath, we deepen the connection with ourselves, with our inner landscape, we awaken our life force energy and activate our own capacity to heal, cleanse and reset the body, mind and spirit.
The breath reconnects our body to our emotions and helps dissolve blocks and resolve inner trauma causing stress and anxiety. It is a beautiful somatic practice that moves all the stagnant energy out of the body and brings coherence to the entire heart, mind, nervous and emotional system.
In a session, you combine different types of breaths (inhalation and exhalation) for different durations, speeds, and intensities together with breath holds or retentions. This affects the central nervous system and ripples out as physical, mental and emotional changes.
Some breath work benefits are: more energy, vitality, clarity, focus, pain alleviation, resilience, presence and peace.
Breathwork is like a light shining on all the shadows – mental and emotional – so that you can become aware of them and consciously let them go. The breathwork benefits and experience varies widely from person to person and time to time. Sometimes it can be purely physical and you may experience a change of mindset or mood. In a longer session it can go deeper into the roots of your challenges or the essence of who you truly are.
My breathing technique is usually paired with words of encouragement to empower you to reach parts of you that were long repressed and ready to be released somatically with choice and agency, always.
During breathwork, deep active controlled breathing techniques have numerous benefits.
It has the ability to stimulate the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, the vagus nerve.
Activating parasympathetic nervous system being responsible for promoting relaxation and reducing stress, its activation leads to a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure, inducing a sense of calm and tranquility.
The vagus nerve, a key regulator of the autonomic nervous system; its activation promotes a sense of well-being, regulates digestion, and even enhances immune function
Additionally, deep breathwork can increase the oxygen levels in the blood, leading to improved brain function. Oxygen is necessary for the brain to function optimally, and increased levels can enhance cognitive abilities, improve focus, and boost overall mental clarity.
Breathwork practices can also affect the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as the release of endorphins, which are natural mood-enhancing chemicals. These endorphins can produce feelings of euphoria and reduce pain sensitivity.
Breathwork is an incredible somatic practice that has changed the way I relate to healing, and I have experienced first hand how it creates positive changes, contributes to improved mental clarity, an overall sense of well-being, and accessing altered states of consciousness by the natural release of DMT.
